Far From Home III
2021. Plaster, Clay, Metal and Sand, 1500 x 2000 x 1500 mm (variable).
Far from Home III was inspired by the devastation caused by “war” on Eastern architecture, particularly representing the obliterated Gaza strip in Palestine. I intended to re-create a small fragment of the crisis to allow the viewers to experience the same level of vulnerability as the displaced civilians. I invite the viewers into the dire space to acknowledge the injustices of the current calamity in Palestine, which has often been neglected and unfairly presented by the media. The rubble that surrounds the towers acts as a barrier - a symbol of division and separation of the oppressed.

The construction process is a significant part of my practice as it allows me to ground myself in the present and enables the viewer to observe my emotions. I use bodily movement and intense processes such as rapidly kneading, sculpting, and aggressively chiseling Clay to release tension, in the mind and body. Using malleable but also rigid Plaster meant that I could also produce gaping holes and broken walls, hence enabling the viewer to identify grief through the visible destruction of the sculptures.
